Search is changing. Google's AI summaries, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other answer engines are increasingly delivering answers directly, instead of just sending people to a list of blue links.

Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is the practice of structuring a website so that AI search tools and answer engines can actually understand it, quote it, and cite it. For most small businesses, AEO is not separate from SEO — it is an extension of it.

What AEO actually is

AEO is about making content easy for machines to understand and easy for humans to read. That means clear answers to real questions, well-structured pages, and supporting data such as schema markup that explains what a page is about.

How search is changing

Search results are no longer just a ranked list of links. Many results now feature AI summaries, direct answers, comparison tables, and rich snippets. Tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions conversationally and cite sources inline.

The websites that get cited tend to share a few common traits: they answer questions directly, structure content clearly, and provide enough context for the AI to understand what they actually do.

What to do on your website

AEO does not require a complete rebuild. For most small businesses, it means tightening the basics.

  • Write clear, direct answers to the questions customers actually ask
  • Use proper headings, short paragraphs, and scannable structure
  • Add a FAQ section with genuinely useful questions and answers
  • Use schema markup to help search engines understand your pages
  • Keep service pages focused, specific, and easy to summarise

Schema markup, in plain English

Schema is a small piece of code that sits on your page and tells search engines what the page is — a business, a service, a product, an FAQ, a review, and so on. It does not change how the page looks to a visitor, but it gives search engines and AI tools structured information they can use.

Common useful schema types for small business websites include LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList.

AEO is not a silver bullet

AEO will not magically push your business to the top of every AI summary. It improves the odds that your content can be understood, quoted, and cited — which over time supports broader visibility across both traditional search and answer engines.

Most of what works for AEO also works for good SEO and good UX — clear answers, sensible structure, and content written for real people. Done together, they prepare a website for how search actually works now, not how it worked five years ago.
